Oral Lichen Planus: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

Lichen Planus is a disease that can affect the entire body but when it affects the oral membrane, it is called as Oral Lichen Planus. The disease is an inflammation that interferes with the mucous membrane of the mouth and may appear as small white threads inside red swollen tissues. It may also show open sores and lesions, which may cause a very intense burning sensation and discomfort accompanied with pain.

Oral Lichen Planus is what they call an autoimmune disease, which means that the immune system of the body produces fighter cells that attack the oral mucous membranes. The reason for this is unknown and you may experience nothing at first, but slowly it may start to spread and become more serious. People being affected by this disease need to take special care of their dental and oral hygiene because there are high chances of them developing oral cancer in some areas. It is important to understand everything you can about this and look out for certain warning signs.

The most common symptoms of oral lichen planus are red and swollen insides of the mouth with white webbed and thread like linings. Then there are red patches of tissue, open sores on the inside of the gums, tongue etc. The most common area for these to occur is the inside area of the cheeks. Dentzz states that you might experience sensitivity to spicy and hot food or blunted taste or bleeding when brushing and inflammation. The disease is more common in women and people who have very weak immunity systems.
